In doing so, the direct injection fueling system is capable of satisfying fueling requirements set forth by high horsepower setups. This is accomplished by increasing the displacement of the pump using high quality components to exacting tolerances. How the direct injection system works: A low pressure fuel pump (LPFP) in the fuel tank delivers fuel to the high pressure fuel pump (HPFP) at roughly 4 to 6 bar. Fuel pressure is then bumped up to a maximum of 110-130 bar, depending on factory parts, with the HPFP. Finally, high pressure fuel is delivered to the injectors, which spray directly into the cylinders. The problem: The volume of fuel the HPFP pump can displace is directly tied to the displacement of the pump (Internal bore size, and cam shaft dictated stroke), and engine speed. The pump is driven off of a three lobe cam shaft, and as such, the pump cycles at 1.5 times the engine speed. Even the factory K03 and K04 turbochargers are capable of taxing this system, especially in the mid to lower RPM range where fuel volume is lower. The APR solution: We dramatically increase the volume of fuel the HPFP can displace at every RPM by increasing the displacement of the HPFP. This is accomplished by increasing the bore diameter of the pump's internal pressurizing cylinder. It's important to understand, despite the name, a HPFP upgrade is not necessary designed to increase the engine's fuel rail pressure. The primary goal is to increase the volume of fuel available, which will keep fuel pressure steady even in the most demanding of situations! High quality components and extreme tolerances: The HPFP internals must be machined to extreme tolerances and installed in a clean environment or the pump can easily fail. Dimensional tolerances on the APR HPFP are as tight as .00004\" and geometric tolerances are as tight as .00005\". \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe plunger and barrel are created from certified and heat-treated bearing-grade stainless steel and the plunger undergoes a special diamond like coating process for exceptional surfaces hardness and ultra-reliable operation. To prevent float associated with altering the plunger's mass, APR supplies each unit with a properly specified spring. All internal seals are replaced, including the spring seal, and the tip of the pump retains the factory pivoting head to reduce cam follower wear and piston side loading. Internal testing: All APR HPFPs are assembled in house under strict assembly guidelines. Each pump is then tested on our test rig to ensure the pumps operate as designed. This step is important for several reasons. It's critical in determining if a pump has a failure from incorrect install, a leaking seal, or a bad solenoid. Secondly, a seized pump on the vehicle at startup can cause damage to the engine's camshaft. By testing each pump, we all but eliminate these possibility. Proven track record: APR pioneered HPFP upgrades in the early days of VAG direct injection engines. Soon after, APR became an OEM supplier of HPFP and GDI components to VAG for use in various race cars, racing series, project cars, and concept vehicles. The APR HPFP has been at the center of countless motorsport victories across the globe and has operated with a nearly perfect tract record since the program's motorsport backed inception in 2006. It’s sucked through your turbo, blown through the intercooler, and forced into the engine. Oil coats the intercooler, hoses, and everything in its path. Not only does this cause a mess, it lowers the effectiveness of the intercooler. More importantly, oil vapors lower your effective octane level, leading to performance robbing, and engine damaging, knock. This means less horsepower, and the possibility of engine damage.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eNext, boost pressure and extreme heat is applied directly on the diaphragms within the PCV valve, and directly onto the factory activated charcoal filter solenoid, or N80 valve. The diaphragms can fail over time, causing massive boost leaks and over pressurization of the engine crankcase. The N80 valve can’t hold back the pressure, causing a boost leak into the activated charcoal filter. Boost leaks rob you of power, and can lead to over-spinning of the turbocharger. Pressurization of the crankcase causes oil to force past the piston rings, leading to potentially engine destroying localized pre-ignition points on the crown of the piston. Crankcase pressurization also results in blown seals, such as the infamous rear main seal. Each situation is bad. You’ll end up with less horsepower, possibility of turbocharger failure, and possibility engine and component damage.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eLastly, under racing, or hard-driving, and high G-force conditions, excessive amounts of oil can be forced through the system to be consumed by the engine. This goes beyond light oil and vapor ingestion discussed above. This is excessive amounts that causes plumes of smoke to pour from the exhaust, and engines to fail due to oil starvation. Oil starvation is a serious condition that can cause engine failures in fractions of a second. In the case of the factory IHI turbocharger, a turbo muffler, or Pulsations-schalldämpfer, is positioned at the compressor outlet and is designed to reduce engine bay acoustics. The APR Turbo Muffler Delete replaces the factory muffler with a straight, uninterrupted piece, CNC-machined from billet aluminum and anodized black. To ensure proper sealing, APR's engineers took a two-part approach. A Viton seal is included and forms a seal between the base of the muffler housing and the new piece. With the seal in place and the outer flange installed, the muffler delete tube screws into place, forming a full, uninterrupted path for airflow. APR's 2-Piece Design Explained: As is true with all machined parts, it's impossible to make all parts the same. In the case of the turbo muffler housing, the distance between the bottom and top of the muffler's housing will vary from turbo to turbo. The acceptable measurement range is known as a tolerance. The nominal distance between the top and bottom of the turbo muffler's mounting points is roughly 51 mm. The tolerance on this part can be as loose as +\/- .5mm or more. This means some muffler housings will be up to 51.5mm tall, or as low as 49.5mm tall. Since the distance between the top and bottom of the muffler chamber will be different on every turbo, a 1-piece turbo muffler delete will always be either too tall or too short. On systems that are too tall, the delete will touch the bottom but will not touch the top mounting point, creating an imperfect seal and potential for a boost leak. If the part is too short, the system will seal at the top, but will leave a small gap at the bottom, thus negating the purpose of the part as illustrated in the diagram below. APR's 2-piece design solves this issue with an adjustable height design. While a 2-piece design is more difficult and expensive to manufacture, it's the only way to ensure an accurate fit and perfect seal. APR provides a Viton seal that's placed at the bottom of the muffler housing. The muffler cover is then installed forming a seal with the factory gasket. Then, the center tube is inserted and screwed into place to the desired depth, compressing against the Viton seal to ensure a leak proof seal in every scenario. Finally Tension from the seal prevents the tube from coming loose, and the included Loctite provides extra security from movement.
